International Projects
Portugal
Almost immediately after returning to Arizona from Japan in the summer of 1995, I left for Portugal at the invitation of the Portuguese Center for Photography. I was to be part of a larger project of photographers invited to make new work in selected areas of the country. I was assigned the Doro River Valley, the location where grapes are grown to make Port wine.
The Portuguese were warm and welcoming and it became an almost inverse experience to living in Japan after the earthquake tragedy. I was given a car to travel freely, money for expenses, and a translator. The photographs were made on a week-long trip from Porto to the Spanish border. Parts of that dry desert-like landscape seemed familiar, and I felt at home.
The work was exhibited and published in Portugal and in a book titled Terras Do Norte Encontros de Fotografia, 1995.
